Granite

    General Information about Granite Countertops:

Granite is a natural stone quarried out of mountains from around the world. This material is highly dense and is composed deep within the earth which solidifies into stone after millions of years.  The newest piece of granite is almost 750 million years old (Marble Institute of America), so old that granite¡¯s durability isn¡¯t measured in years ¨C it¡¯s measured in eons. Granite consists of approximately 20 percent Quartz. Quartz is the prominent mineral that gives granite its strength and durability. Unlike man-made products, granite will maintain its high gloss virtually forever.

Below are some general questions people have about granite:

    Can Granite chip?

Granite will not chip under normal use. Only in severe abuse such as dropping a hammer or a cast iron pan on your counter will it be damaged.  If a chip does occur it can be fixed using epoxy and specialized equipment.

    Can Granite crack?

In general, no, not with regular use. Granite is most susceptible to cracks during shipping and installation. Granite will not flex like laminate and solid surface tops, therefore, it is imperative that cabinetry is installed correctly and plum level square.  Normal use will not distress this material.

    Does Granite stain?

Granite itself is approx. 95-98% stain resistant. All stone, however, is porous to some extent. Some granites are more porous than others due to the compression and material make up of the stone. Depending on the granite, it should be sealed every 1-2 years as a preventative measure to help maintain its beauty and to prevent any damage from staining.

Can I cut on my Granite countertops?

Most granite is extremely difficult to scratch. Check with your granite representative when choosing your stone for durability. Under normal use, such as general cutting, granite resists scratching better than any other surface.  Granite is harder than your knife blades so it will dull your knives quickly!

Can I set hot pot on my Granite?

Yes. You can place hot pots and pans on your granite countertops as long as they are within normal stove temperatures. It is recommended that you do not scrape pots and pans across your counters.
